The pieces of lithium should be pre-cut. 0.05 g of lithium metal is a cube with a 4.5 mm edge.

If you do not have enough gas syringes for this practical an alternative apparatus is shown in the photograph opposite. I tried this out and it gave excellent results.

Alternative gas collection apparatus for the reaction between lithium and water

Materials:

Lithium metal (0.05 g) Full range indicator
Side arm test tube and bung Connecting rubber tubing
Gas syringe Forceps
Disposable gloves Filter paper
Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.001 g
